Hey,
Just wanting to get some info on Kelowna. My boyfriend and I are thinking of moving over at the end of next year from Melbourne, Australia. What's it like? Is Kelowna really tiny or quite large? we are both in Marketing (my boyfriend has a lot of IT experiene too though.) Is it hard to get professional jobs? can anyone recommend some good websites or job search websites for me? Thanks!

It is a beautiful city to live and close to all amenities. If you are living in Melbourne I think you will like it. The city itself I believe is 100 000 people give or take...depends on the time of year you take the census.. We are a HUGE tourist city with mainly jobs for the restaurantours(sp) or those with good solid careers. As for a couple of job sites...I can post one that my sister has been using. regionalhelpwanted.com/p/jobs%5Fcity/192/Kelowna/?SN=192If you go onto Okanagan Job listings and such there are ALOT of job sites. Rental availabilities right now are good...house costs are high though due to a high demand in the market and the lower interest rates. Take a look and I know there are more job sites out there...just don't have them bookmarked right now...she has them in her job search book sorry. Welcome to the board...

G'day eh! Population of Kelowna is about 110,000 now and it's growing very quickly. It's getting fairly cosmopolitan but we're only about 5 hours away from Vancouver if you want a taste of big city life for the weekend. There is a small but growing high tech sector and fairly high demand for experienced professionals like marketing types. On the down side, salaries tend to be quite low compared to larger centers like Vancouver and Toronto and housing is getting very expensive.
The best job search sites are Workopolis.ca and Monster.ca. You can also try thompsonokanaganjobshop.ca. There is also the website of the science and technology council for the okanagan (ostec.ca). They have job postings and lists of high tech employers in the area. Sometimes it's good to knock on doors. I know several people who got high tech jobs that way.
Kelowna is a great place to live! Excellent weather in the summer, a beautiful lake, fantastic mountain biking, and superb skiing. Pretty much everyone in Canada would like to live here.
Good luck with your search, keep us posted.

hmmmm where to start I am somewhat biased toward our fair city as I was born here and have always returned from other parts of the world. Kelowna is neither too big nor too small I think 100 thousand is a nice round number. The people here are great unless you start talking politics...har har. Here is a url for you to peruse as far as job shopping thompsonokanaganjobshop.ca/home/192.htm , good luck to both of you and look us up here on the forum when you get settled in. best regards..Da Sleepster

I found these websites helpful when I was looking for work. I hope they help you in your search. www.theokanagan.net/ (The Daily Courier is the Kelowna paper that is published every day. The Saturday and Sunday Okanagan papers are published on Saturday and Sunday only. Choose the newspaper you'd like to look at ... click on Classifieds on the left hand side of the page ... a new page appears with categories of classified advertisements) www.jobbank.gc.ca (Government run job finding website. Quite helpful and always updated.)
