I hear on the radio "We want to thank the fighterfighters and volunteers for all the things they have done and express our appreciation for these things. This is a message from such and such. We have been in business for such and such years and would like your business. Please contact us at (phone number) we are located at ( address in Kelowna). I think it is underhanded conniving and selfish for local businesses to try to gain from all those people that have lost their homes and all the firefighters and volunteers for all the hard work they have done. If these so called appreciative businesses weren't doing it to advertise their business they should leave out the part about the length of time in business their address and phone number!!!

You're absolutely right on! How sleazy! Now I know why I stopped listening to the local garbage and now tune to CBC, even while at work.

I hear on the radio "We want to thank the fighterfighters and volunteers for all the things they have done and express our appreciation for these things.... Well - now you know what businesses to boycott and/or send a letter to them telling them you won't be a patron again and why. Myself, if I don't like a businesses attitude, political affiliation, service - or whatever, I don't bother telling them - I just don't go back, but tell my friends and relative why I won't patronize that business - and word mouth advertising is the best. Like SkepticAl, I don't listen to radio, but UNlike him, I don't listen to any radio - except now and then to test the waters and it's always been cold. Your choice though.. but I hear ya.

Amen!! That could be the worst bit of advertising dollars some of these businesses could ever spend!!! If the masses think it's sleasy, the business has then wasted both their time and money on that advertising. May you, the general public of Kelowna, decide that!!

Philanthropy vs. Business: the other side of the coin
Hmmm. I haven't heard the message myself, as I don't listen to the radio except when in the car. I guess my reaction would depend on the script and the voice talent.
How does a business express their appreciation for the firefighting services etc.? I guess a sign in the window or a donation to the fund would be a couple of ways.
Others include special product items where part of the price is donated to the relief funds. We heard nothing but applause when Byland's did this.
Another might be to dedicate part of their regular advertising budget to a "thank you" message. And since this costs... well... money, maybe the way to justify this "thank you" expense to the bookkeeper (read: the bank that owns their business loan), would be to mention the company name and number.
Do you think a grateful business owner should not publicly thank the firefighters etc.?
How about Christmas adverts? "Merry Christmas from XYZ Company, serving Kelowna since 19XX, 860-XXXX"
This is neither underhanded nor conniving. it is a PR and advertising/marketing strategy. Some folks will (over)react poorly, and others will see that business "such and such" is striving to be a member of the community.
Don't think businesses are suffering severe fallout from the fire? Wrong.
Peace

Did you hear that Cher donated $106,500 to the North Thompson fire relief fund today? What an insult huh? I'm sure not going to buy anymore of her music. I mean I would if she hadn't told anyone the money was from her. I'm sure she only did it for some free publicity.
Yes I'm mocking you crap slingers. Get a life. The real tragedy here is when people want to help but hold back because they don’t want to be accused of trying to prosper on the backs of those in need.
And the real crazy thing is that the crap slingers opinion is the one we shouldn’t listen to.

What a lot of - - what is it you call such stuff - -"crap"? If a business wants to help, they can do it without a lot of fanfare-advertising that they are doing it. They can just do it - period. Advertising the fact is just riding on the back of a disaster. CAVEAT[/color] If that business advertises that people can help them to raise funds by participating in a special event with the business, like buying two for one and the profits from one will go to the charity - that MIGHT get by them being sleezy and cheesy. What's that you say? I can't hear you! Sheesh!

While I don't listen to the radio, it sounds as if they are running a lot of paid ads from businesses riding on the backs of the disaster. I have seen full page ads in the newspaper from advertisers that don't normally talke out full page ads. Television, especially CHBC (Global Communications Ltd.) must be well in the black with all the world buying up time and clips.
The economic spin-off will be interesting. In future, investing in media stock might prove profitable in the short term - right now, in construction material is where it's at. STTA
In the furure...? Yes. I hope people don't think this won't happen again in the valley. We are growing - and growing fast. A lot is going up on the Kelowna side, making it hard to see, but on the outer rims, homes, businesses are being buuilt evey day amongst the trees and fuel. It's just a matter of time - again.

Any publicity this MIGHT generate for Cher would be limited and probably not worth the cost. Have you considered that she didn't make an announcement but the news kinda snuck out?
You remind me of the story of the woman on the beach, screaming for help because her son is drowning. A man runs out and pulls the boy to safety. She doesn't say "thank you", she says "He had a hat."
I believe this was an altruistic act. A simple "thank you" would suffice.

"Did you hear that Cher donated $106,500 to the North Thompson fire relief fund today? What an insult huh? ...." There is a HUGE difference between what Cher did, and what some local businesses are doing - a HUGE difference! But clearly, some can't fathom that. Exactly - that's all local buisness had to do - say thanks, not " We have been in business for such and such years and would like your business. Please contact us at ...."Cher didn't donate money, then jump on camera to ask people to visit their local Disc shop and bring money. Local businesses did. Therein lays a big difference. It's OK though - I'm sure they'll realize life is more complex than just the black & white they see -- once their meds kick in.

Way to go guys and gals its nice to get others opinions. Cher probably didnt tell of her donation. She is constantly surrounded by the media. As for christmas who doesnt agree that it is no longer what it used to be it is commercialized. because of that what do you expect but I still maintain that what businesses are doing here is not like christmas Cher etc they are taking advantage of many peoples suffering and loss to gain for themselves by advertising their business as making a generous note of appreciation to all that help but dont forget we are and our phone number is and we are located at tell me that isnt trying to get people to know they are there and come shop at my store cuz I'm a good guy cuz i said thankz to the firefighters and others for what they are doing.
