I have been visiting this forum since it was up. It seems like on almost every thread, no matter what someone's opinion is, no matter how they say it, other posters come on to that thread and cut them down, mock them, shame them, lecture them, or else have something negative to say about what's going on daily in the community. Yes there are threads that have positive comments, but even those often have someone come on with a negative to say. I don't mean negative as in 'goign against the grain or the most popular opinion'. I mean they sound mean, and say something that they likely would never say to a person's face. It's not just a simple disagreement, it's cutting people down for what they have to say.
A while ago someone who used to live in Kelowna posted to say they hope that this fire tragedy brings the community closer together. I thought 'I hope so too'. I grew up in Kelowna. I know what she was talking about in her thread. People replied saying that 'yes the community is pulling together, getting friendlier, etc.'
Well, look at these posts with all of the negative comments. Instead of being mean to one another, how about being nice? How about assuming that everyone is hurting and that everyone wants to figure out the best way to get through this, and support each other? Don't just say that you do, actually do it. Imagine that the person who is writing a comment or otherwise trying to help has kindness and compassion in their hearts. Imagine you are talking with a friend who is hurting- what would you say to help them get through their pain?

I mean they sound mean, and say something that they likely would never say to a person's face. Why does it take a disaster to make communities pull together? Guaranteed though, like all other disasters, the 'community spirit won't last - peole will go back to being people - until the next time, when we can pull together again. You want lemmings that line up, walk single file, grin, smile, and be all nice and cosy? Move to Stepfoord. This is real life, where people have real ideas, and even if you don't like it, it's still not a totallitarian society where select people do the thinking for us. It would be a very boring life if we all went around agreeing with one another, praising each other, and acting like we all caved in and became Stepford residents. You scare me.

Tha's exactly what I mean. Everything I wrote about was said with kindness. Perhaps 'nice' was the wrong word- respect and compassion would be better ones in retrospect.
I don't want lemmings, I love a good discussion/argument. I am far from a lemming myself and don't like it when people fall in order 'just because'. I don't want to live in a totalitarian state- I already think that North America has too many rules and prevents us from living our lives fully. Nothing I wrote above says anything like that. You don't know me so please don't make assumptions about me.
And thanks (or perhaps it should be no thanks) for proving my point. You did it well.

I couldn't agree with you more - I've never seen such brutal attacks on people as I have in this forum. Granted, everyone here is under alot of stress, but that is still no excuse for brutality.
I just moved to Kelowna in January and from what I've seen, I do not want to live here any longer, fires or no fires. I believe that there are great people in Kelowna - I'm just tired of listening to the small-minded vocal minority that needs to put others before self for a change.
Expecting a good blast for this reply from the vocal minority - ha ha

I hear what you are saying. There is so much pettiness and spitefulness on this board- I can hardly believe what some people post- it's not the content so much as the attitude and tone. I don't think they would say these things to someone's face- at least I hope they wouldn't. I used to live there and won't move back. It's too bad because it's so beautiful and the climate is great. But you know, there are some great people there, you just have to sift through a lot. I'm sure you will enjoy living there, especially when the summer comes next year! It's nice in the summer- the lake is so warm.

hmmm, I don't recall reading anything in the posts about not liking negative commments. Sounds like the complaint is about the personal attacks and lack of respect shown to posters.

Shiva, Compassion might scare you but you give me the Shivvas!!!!
what's bugging you man.
I'm all for one being able to have their own opinions, and being able to speak them, but lose the nastiness. It's just not necessary to be that way to still have your own mind on things.
