I just got back from a weekend visit to Kelowna and attended a public meeting with representatives from your city. It appears that those who lost their homes and/or had their property damaged/destroyed by the fire, will still be paying property tax as if everything was intact and it never happened. The Kelowna city representatives said that they cannot and will not do anything to assist the property owners in this regard. You have to go to the Provincial level and go through a long process to appeal the valuation of your property. In the mean time you will be paying full property tax for a house that no longer exists!!! It just amazes me to see these self important political representives get flown all over the province to discuss the fire issues at your expense, and then provide no assistance in reducing the tax valuation of your property. If I was a Kelowna resident I would make sure that these representatives find themselves in a legal tangle and kicked out of office... They are such a wastage of protein...

harping on those who lost their homes to clean up their properties as well...those with land are still waiting for their Insurance appointed people to allow them to clean up as well as trying to decide what to do with all the trees such as in another thread...leave them be or cut them down to prevent erosion...Most people just want to get on with their lives and they are not being given a break...the taxes up there are out of this world and being now as for most of these people it isn't their pricipal residence they no longer get the homeowners grant as well as they are living elsewhere...The insurance companies are doing their best as some people are getting action a little faster for rebuiding and some like my parents are still in the meeting stages for stuff before anything can happen...Ahhhhh all the legal mumbo jumbo and all the red tape...now they live in a basement suite and are doing the running around trying to get their lives back to normal...whatever that may be...

So basically is this boiling down to now that the heat is over there is alot of political back peddling.... Local government - backpeddling on their promise to assist those effected by this fire in any way they can. Federal government - now hearing stories that our wonderful PM has A.D.D. and has forgotten all his promises made to help us in this fire riddled province..... Provincial government - haven't heard any backpeddling yet... but give it time.....
When I heard of the yellow ribbon campaign and others I wondered if the politicians were going to see this as their way out.... let them go to these sources for benefits.....
Hmmm.... maybe its time for the dreaded S word, separation..... have our own little kingdom..... whose with me.... as long as I get the title b@@ch of the mtn, I mean Queen of the mtn then I'm happy.

Hmmm.... maybe its time for the dreaded S word, separation..... . You are free to join the US of A where FEMA would have already written out checks for all of those affected. For those who don't know, FEMA takes care of Americans when bad events occur. So, come on down and let B.C. become our 51st state... ;D You will have lower taxes and a better medical system as well...

No disrespect to the Washingtonian, but I can't seem to stop thinking he meant Western Canada seperate from Eastern Canada. If you follow Canadian politics,( which it looks like you do because you DO sound knowledgeable), you'd see that anything east of Manitoba is like a different planet let alone country! Ottawa has time and time again totally crapped on Western Canada, and broke promises. I would gladly take B.C., Alta, Sask, and Mb for a country. B.T.W. why don't you get Washington State to join us! You would be a real asset to the group, not tomention it's a beautiful State...um...province.
