Meeting the needs of the fire victims is extremely important and, from what I have heard on the news, is being handled very well. Donations of material goods and cash have been pouring in from many generous contributors. The time has now come to refocus on the needs of our homeless and other groups in financial distress. It has come to my attention that one such group is suffering of late due to inability to collect donations. The Okanagan Single Parent Food Bank, on the Westside, is struggling greatly to put together the hampers of perishable foods for their registered single parent families, every second week. The last two food banks were very thinly provided due to a lack of funding. Since the hampers consist of things like milk, cheese, eggs, butter, fruits and vegetables, funds are necessary to be able to purchase these items. Volunteers work very hard on the phones soliciting funds to keep this registered charity functioning. Due to the needs of the fire victims, these donations have severely fallen short. Please remember all charities who depend on your support now that the fire crisis has eased off.
