Hey cowgirl...I agree;I have been donating to this fire "relief" fund for people who were affected by the fires. It is a sad state of affairs when one of the first items on the Governments agenda is "rebuild" the trestles, (god forbid) What about the peoples homes, the businesses, the burnt out forests, and the government wants to rebuild the trestles,, The trestles are history now, something we can go back to the history books for and read about the beautiful trestles, or for that matter, the people of this great community can come together and fundraise and rebuild the trestles. But lets take a look at people who get the run around from a "committee", what committee? Formed by who? Who gets to be on this committee and make a decision if you are "eligible" for funding? Were their homes burnt down, did they get to back to a home? Hundreds and thousands of dollars have been donated and raised for people affected by the fires, and government takes control of all that cash; they pay the committee members? they pay people in power? where does all that money go? Sorta like when you send money to a foster child on television; does the money actually make it there? No. It goes to pay for all advertising and keeping people in their jobs; maybe 10 cents makes it to the real people that need it. It seems when the government comes into all this "extra" money, they have to start "processes" and now they have to decide what the Lots are worth? Obviously they wont be worth a penny now, and thats exactly what the government will say, and the money they give out will be predetermined on property value as of now, not last year, when it was beautiful and not in a burned out section. Do we support the trestles being rebuilt by the feds and province or do we support our local community and stand up and get decisions from our local municipal government and not national organizations who decide who is getting how much money and when.

Laurel is correct about the quality of produce and fruit in big box stores. Our family has grown up in Kelowna and worked in the fruit industry for many years.Packing house fruit is gassed, stored and waxed for consumer appearance and longivity.People who grow up here know the only way to buy fruit is grower direct.Money should not be your only consideration as far as health and quality of food goes.YES local businesses deserve our support and fair compensation for losses during the fire season.I suggest a three year previous average income to determine the loss for fruit related businesses.Good luck in your pursuit, for a fair settlment.

while after you posted it...well the verdict is in...their property values are posted AT what they were origionally listed at BEFORE the fire as they called all over the world and in any fire affected area they said that the property values NEVER went down...it just attracted a different type of consumer...so in the case of mom and dad's lot now with all the work that needs to be done on it before it is able to be built on with the RED flag from the city and from the Geotechnical Surveyors...they can take the written reports stating what needs to be done, the cost of doing it and their property assessments that were just sent out and do the apeal prosess....Most properties that were just simple lots will be assesed normally as of OCT 1st/03.(Everyone's as affected by the fire) but if you have easements, hillside travel and is considered not safe to build on that has alot of work to do they can get it re-assessed based on they cannot sell it for the recommended price without the full disclosure of all the extra cash output. This seems like it would have been a simple procedure to fix at city hall being as they are the ones that issued red flags and sent out the Geotechnical surveyors but with being not in city hall and no concept of the left hand right hand not knowing I guess this is just an uneducated guess on my part? Just wanted to let you know what came of this.....

frustrated, I feel the way you do....I worked the fire all last year from the second day to the end of it. I have had the experience of a life time. I picked up donations and brought them to the adra building and the rec centre....with my own gas, time off work and time away from my family. I had my purse stolen and the money that I had was all gone. No insurance for cash at all. I still never gave up on the people that needed my help. I started to watch what was going on at the rec centre...For example: I happen to know this family really well and know that they were "stealing from the POOR"! I was shocked when I seen what they were doing! They would come to the tent to get clothing, diapers, food and blankets. Then they would take it to the truck around the corner and send the daughter in for the same items for a second time. Then that wasn't good enough they'd get the father to go and get the same thing all over again. I watched this and thought how could they do this....I went to adra to help them sort the items and set up there, well look who walks in the door....the same family one at a time.....So, I said to the gal that was running it, these people where just at the rec centre and here thay are to get more stuff. I told the social service people so they could be aware of this type of stuff. Three days later after all they got they came in and signed up for more food vouchers again after just getting a large amount of free stuff times 6. How could they do this????? This lady ran a business downtown Kelowna (and ripped off many people) for many years and has a farm with animals. She wasn't even a burnt out victim! She only had to leave her home for a week or so. Yes, I agree with the people getting all that insurance money back and still taking more donations! I do feel sad that they can't replace the items that were old that they have lost in the fire. But the donation money they get on top of the insurance money will not buy the old things they lost either! Some people took others to the cleaners and others gave the shirts on their backs to help out. Look at the criminals that went to the open burnt out houses to steal what was left to make a buck on.....SAD SAD SAD!
