All fire survivors get a letter on city letterhead saying they get 20% off if they shop at Home Depot? A US company at that? I say SHAME.

First of all let's make it clear that Home Depot is a publically held company, which is widely held by Canadian shareholders. Seems to me that it was nice of the city to let the people know about the discount, and generous of Home Depot to make the offer.

I would have to agree that perhaps a Canadian store should have been chosen. Perhaps a smaller, local business... I expect, however, that it wasn't the City giving the discount...Home Depot probably offerred it. Perhaps the Canadian Hardware store should have come to the table first? When I think about it...It's hard to keep track of which stores are Canadian! Revy used to be but isn't now (correct?!) Home Hardware? For that matter I was surprised to learn that Tim Horton's is owned by the Wendy's chain - sure, maybe the Canadian side of Wendy's... but Wendy's is still American! And all this time I had been avoiding the flashy American chain coffee shops!!

Actually Revy, which is now called Rona, is still 100% canadian. Thier home office is in Boucherville Quebec. But it is a Publicly owned company so it is technically owned by anyone anywhere. That aside they also have helped those who have lost thier homes in the fire this year they just haven't used it as a platform for advertising as the Home Depot has.

community at any time we found. Home Depot from the time they came has supported the schools and community in many different ways. When the boil water advisories happen Home depot helps by donating water to the schools, rona has been here a long time and never has done this. Home Depot has a strong hand in community support and for a big box company I think this is a cool aspect of the company. Rona to my knowledge has done nothing of the sort. I think it is great that Home Depot has vowed to help rebuild this community...20% is a nice start to help those who need to rebuild or fix their fire damaged homes.

I agree. The Canadian companies had the same opportunity to offer discounted products as Home Depot.
If the City of Kelowna actively pursued Home Depot by offering reduced property taxes (or whatever) then things would be different. But my understanding is Home Depot offered this on their own.
Kudos to Home Depot, and kudos to The City for making this known. American or not, they deserve respect for what they have done.
