It just blows my mind that firefighters have set up a sprinkler system on trestle #1 to prevent it from being destroyed by the fire.
We put sprinklers on OUR house (because we live just below Barnaby) and they actually turned off our water supply on the Friday (so we couldn't use our sprinkler) that the fire was just up the hill because they wanted to save the water to fight the fire.
So they would rather have houses burn than the trestles. That really pisses me off. I needed to vent.

The sprinkler on your house draws water directly from the city water supply, more sprinklers = less water for the firemen.
The sprinkers on the trestles draw from some very large pools (kinda like swimming pools) that the firemen have setup near the trestles and filled via helecopter (I believe), there isn't an actual running water supply up there.

Let houses burn, they're replacable. Trestles aren't!!

Were you personally affected at all by the fire??
Did your hosue almost burn down or did it burn down?
Because I can assure you that 99.9% of the people that were somehow directly affected by this fire could give two poos about the trestles. I know I could.
And to correct you, the trestles are replacable. It is called rebuilding them.
Somehow I see the 248 homes that were lost more important than losing all but 4 of the precious trestles.

If that's your view, but were those houses designated as [glow=red,2,300]National Historic Sites?[/glow]

will tell you that their house was irreplacable...the memories, the history the security, the love....yes..the houses can be replaced and so can the tressles...Peoples lives are damaged here as well...the tressles well i hate to say it have no feelings, they can be rebuilt...people will be a little more difficult...have you kids and try to explain to them they have no home to go home too? What about the couple of retirees who have no where to go? Tressles are no home to anyone at this point and time...I dare to say..anyone who says that hasn't got a heart for human beings...I say rebuild the tressles in the right time...lets get lives back on track first...

HOME....security,love,life,memories,growth charts on doorjams, little ones handprints in cement, a seedling planted from kindergarten, faded christmas lights on the eves, and so much more.TRESTLE..... a part of our history, once or twice removed, like a great, great grandparent. A Canadian link maintained with much care and attention.... How does one choose? I think one does not...Whatever cards you are dealt in this game, you play. How you bet is up to you...I think we have the ace up our sleeve....We can win this hand.

Bo - where were you 5 weeks ago, when these National Historical Treasurers weren't given a second thought, when they had NO money to maintain the road going up there, put up a gate to keep out evening arsonists, to maintain the trestles themselves.... I am so sick and tired of suddenly everyone coming out of the wood work saying oh say the trestles save the trestles !!!! NONE of you people that are saying that have busted your ass trying to perserve these NATIONAL HISTORICAL TREASURERS before.... So you can't ride along them anymore, well boo freaking hoo.l....did you ever put money forward to maintain or preserve them BEFORE this oh so tragic event... probably not. If these were so priceless before the fire, then why wasn't that tinder dry park closed before the fire, like all our other parks were,... because frankly no one but the neighbours gave a crap about the park - as long as it was open for their use thats all that matters.... don't give two thoughts about sparks off of engines, or hot mufflers driving across dangerously dry grass.
You say let the homes burn save the trestles, I'll tell you this, I am one of many that have said thank god they are gone !!!! People used them for free and then pregnant doged about lack of emergency phone/ bathrooms/ bumping unmaintained roads.. YOU WERE GETTING THEM FOR FREE PEOPLE.....
I for one don't want them rebuilt, the fire is not over, it is just lying low waiting for a nice dry spring to pop its ugly head again, and do what take your brand new trestles.... The history of the trestles is gone.... rebuilding them is not going to bring back the history.... instead why not utilize what we now have up there which is a heck of alot more trails - wide enough for vehicles and bikes and horseback....forestry has been kind enough to cut through some incrediably long and wide fire lines... I am just iching till its safe to use them. From these roads your going to see the same thing as you could from the trestles... wildlife, some trees and alot of burnt ash. I'm sorry if this offends anyone but the statement let the homes burn and save the trestles is just ludicrous and disgusting... obviously your home is NO WHERE NEAR where the fire was otherwise you wouldn't have made such a moronic statement..... How would you feel if I was some tree hugger who as your house caught fire from something inside and I went to the fire hall and said, hey let his house burn but save those poor pyramid cedars... you think I was nuts ! This is the end of my rant, except for this.... this weekend Myra Canyon Entrance has been inindated with fire tourists... people get it through your head... you see the machinery going up, you see the army crews heading up - where in the world do you think that you should be up and in their way right now... I talked to the road guard there this weekend, and he's turning away on average 4 cars every couple of hours. While I was there he turned away 6 cars of looky loos - it chilled my blood to see people not using their common sense... we still know there is hot spots all over there - this fire is not over.... and somehow someone thinks hey what an ideal spot to drive right now.... Hmm.... maybe I should go back to bed

I think the fire is pretty much taken care of at this point so instead of sitting in front of your PC complaining about every little thing possible why don't you people get of your fat lazy butts and get a life.

To Guest, its obviuos that you have not been listening to a radio, watched tv, or checked any newspapers or you would see / hear, that the fire is not over even though its 90 percent contained. Forestry figures it will be burning until the snow starts to fly this way. Also you would have heard about the new fire that started up down around Oliver. We all have a life, if you can read, check out all the posts and discover all of the good that this site has done, but the way I figure it you need to get off your butt and get a life. As mentioned above about your ignorance of the current fire situation in the hills, you should try to do what you suggest to others. And nextime why dont you register instead of hiding behind a guest name.

Well considering that I am part of the fire fighting crew I don't think that I need to listen to the radio/TV or read the newspapers to know the status of the fires in BC.

know....and if you had any compassion as to what the people went thru and spent any time out there...you would know it has affected many people in more ways than one...such as comming together with people who have been there...so why come on now and tell us to get off our lazy butts..who are you to judge a few people who post every once and a while...I know many firemen and it is contained...but not over...

I never said the fire was out. I do feel sorry for the people that lost their homes and I know it takes time to recover from this but this is my first time reading this forum and most of the posts that I have read are nothing but negative postings and I just think these people need to find something better to do with their time.

very negative on here...the forum was a great source of help for many of us and if you go back thru the history you will see that. We have put up with much negativity on the board and I am sorry you got lumped into that. Here is hoping this is not a sign of what is to come here in Kelowna.
