When I'm called to duty God wherever flames may rage give me strength to save a life whatever be its age
Help me to embrace a little child before it is too late or save an older person from the horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert to hear the weakest shout and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me to guard my neighbor and protect his property
And if according to your will I have to lose my life bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife.
This prayer is dedicated to all the men and women* who risk their lives daily to keep all of us safe. I, as well as British Columbians, and citizens across the globe, thank you for your endless efforts.
"The fearless have no fear, the brave act despite their fear."
You are all heros. Thank you. I love you.
* This prayer is over 100 years old and does not take into account female firefighters. This is in no way meant as a slight against female firefighters around the world.

I still remember the first time I ever saw the poem, I was seven and at my dad's friend's house (who is a firefighter). It really made me think, I guess because I was young I just thought firefighting was cool, I never thought firefighters could be killed in the line of duty and it really sank in to me that I could lose my dad (who is also a firefighter). Fortunately, he and his friend and their department have never had any deaths in the line of duty. But it still really makes you think. I'm now dating a hopeful firefighter, and his sister is a forestry firefighter up fighting all the interior fires right now. I just always pray for safety to all those out there risking their lives to keep us safe. Thank you so much.

"To guard my neighbour and protect his property"...This line of verse has rung true many times since this beast first reared it's hot head. I am extremely grateful and give thanks to all firefighters for their efforts. This is a beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing it.
